HV Harmonic Filters and Current Limiting Reactors

High-voltage reactors are used in medium and high-voltage (MV) level power systems;

  • to reduce harmonic distortions,

Reactor Types and Functions

Harmonic Filter Reactors: Connected in series with capacitor banks, they create high impedance at harmonic frequencies, thus preventing harmonic propagation to the grid.

They are usually selected with reactance ratios of 5.67% / 7% / 14%.
It reduces the risk of resonance in the system and increases the lifespan of the capacitor.

Current Limiting Reactors: Limit the sudden current peaks that occur when capacitor banks are commissioned.

  • It protects equipment such as circuit breakers, contactors, and capacitors.

  • It plays a critical role, especially in back-to-back switching situations.
